Muslim youth in India dissociate from terror: Sufi cleric

By IANS,

New Delhi : The realisation that jihadis are using Islam to create an environment of terror is leading Muslim youth in India to dissociate themselves from violence and radicalism, says a leading Islamic scholar and cleric.

“The followers of Islam have no link with the minions of terror,” said Hazrat Maulana Syed Mohammed Ashraf Sahab Kichhouhhawi, general secretary of the All-India Ulama and Mashaik Board.

Addressing a gathering on “Sufism and Indian Islam” at the Vivekananda International Foundation late Monday, he said, “The Wahabis (ultra-orthodox Muslim) were using biased literature to propagate their theorised monotheism which has currently become the reservoir of terrorism the world over.” [more…]

Suicide bombings kill innocent Muslims, they declare

Islamic clerics are denying suicide bombers their last rites. The killing of others and themselves is completely un-Islamic, they say, contrary to the popular misconception that such bombers act on the pretense that such acts will get them into heaven.

Religious scholars in Pakistan say suicide bombers are likely to suffer eternal damnation rather than go to paradise because their acts, blowing themselves up and others invite the wrath of Allah.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) – “Most suicide attackers act on the misconception that their acts receive the pleasure of Allah, but the fact is they are killing and injuring innocent Muslims,” Maulana Muhammad Rehman, a prayer leader in a mosque in the Khyber Agency of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas says.

In addition, religious scholars in Pakistan say suicide bombers are likely to suffer eternal damnation rather than go to paradise because their acts, blowing themselves up and others invite the wrath of Allah.

The seven agencies of the FATA bordering Afghanistan are the breeding ground for young suicide bombers who are trained and indoctrinated by the Taliban before being sent out to commit violent acts abroad.

“According to Prophet Muhammad – peace be upon him – killing one person amounts to killing the whole of humanity because there is no way to forgive killers,” Maulana Rehman told journalists.

Wahhabis. Deobandis. Tablighi Jamaat. Orthodox outfits have been turning the Valley into a bastion of puritanical Islam. But the Sufis are fighting back to regain their moorings.

By Riyaz Wani

A COLOURFUL procession stretched a mile long along the picturesque Dal lake. A truck carrying preachers in green turbans was followed by thousands of faithfuls waving green flags. Some people were busy at makeshift kitchens on the roadside where tehri (turmeric-dyed rice), salt tea and kehwa were served to the devotees.

The occasion was not a political rally but the celebration of Eid Milad (Prophet’s birthday) on 12 February. Organised by Minhajul Islam, a newly-floated Barelvi outfit, the procession was a not-so-veiled attempt to reassert the Valley’s Sufi tradition and reclaim the religious space ceded to the conservative Wahhabi Islam. It was the first time in the past two decades that the festival attracted such a massive crowd — estimated to be around 1 lakh people.

Similar events were held at shrines housing the Prophet’s relics. Bazaars and government offices were lit up, adding to the festive air. Understandably, this uninhibited display of festivities didn’t go down well with the adherents of puritanical Islam, who want celebrations to be “austere and exclusively devoted to worship”.
