Khutbah 1/20/2012 – Ya Sin 60-65 redux

bismillahir rahmanir raheem

Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem

Alam a’Ahad ilaykum ya banee adama an la ta’Abudoo alshshaytana innahu lakum ‘Aaduwwun mubeenun

“Did I not enjoin on you, O Children of Adam, that ye should not worship Satan; for truly he is your open enemy?-

 Waani o’Abudoonee hatha siratun mustaqeemun

“And that ye should worship Me, for that is the Straight Path?

So Allah (swt) not only warned us against following our enemy Shaitan but he has also given us a way out, his mercy is overwhelming, we do not have to fumble around wondering what to do, he (Allah (swt)) tells us clearly to worship him and that is صراط المستقيم. The way straight to him and straight in that it never deviates from the goal which is to live as a Muslim and to follow Allah (swt) guidance.

For it is up to us, it is reported by Abu Huraira in a sahih hadith that Rasul Allah (SAW) Allah’s Apostle said, “All my followers will enter Paradise except those who refuse.” They said, “O Allah’s Apostle! Who will refuse?” He said, “Whoever obeys me will enter Paradise, and whoever disobeys me is the one who refuses (to enter it).” Think about that! The one who refuses to enter! You refuse the blessings of Allah (swt) and the garden by walking another path. For Allah (swt) says in the next ayah.

Walaqad adalla minkum jibillan katheeran afalam takoonoo ta’Aqiloona

“But he did lead a great many of you astray. Did you not, then, use your reason?

Again Allah (swt) is reminding us of our ability to reason. When we see those around us who have gone astray, who have deviated from the path, we know that they are going wrong. They have let darkness overcome them and they are an example for the rest of us. Do we not see them, do we not know when we recognize those things in ourselves?

And in a hadith narrated by Jabir bin Abdullah – Some angels came to the Prophet while he was sleeping. Some of them said, “He is sleeping.” Others said, “His eyes are sleeping but his heart is awake.” Then they said, “There is an example for this companion of yours.” One of them said, “Then set forth an example for him.” Some of them said, “He is sleeping.” The others said, “His eyes are sleeping but his heart is awake.” Then they said, “His example is that of a man who has built a house and then offered therein a banquet and sent an inviter (messenger) to invite the people. So whoever accepted the invitation of the inviter, entered the house and ate of the banquet, and whoever did not accept the invitation of the inviter, did not enter the house, nor did he eat of the banquet.” Then the angels said, “Interpret this example to him so that he may understand it.” Some of them said, “He is sleeping.” The others said, “His eyes are sleeping but his heart is awake.” And then they said, “The houses stands for Paradise and the call maker is Muhammad; and whoever obeys Muhammad, obeys Allah; and whoever disobeys Muhammad, disobeys Allah. Muhammad separated the people (i.e., through his message, the good is distinguished from the bad, and the believers from the disbelievers).”

 Hathihi jahannamu allatee kuntum too’Aadoona

“This, then is the Hell of which you were repeatedly warned!

And now the facts of what they have earned are right before them. They now realize what they will reap. Had they realized this before after the repeated warnings, both in this life and in the many books that had been revealed before the Qur’an they would be spared but now it is too late.

 Islaw-ha alyawma bima kuntum takfuroona

Burn in it this Day, for your persistent rejection of Truth.”

And now experience the reality of it. For Allah (swt) also says in Sura Al-Hajj:

وَالَّذِينَ سَعَوْا فِي آيَاتِنَا مُعَاجِزِينَ أُولَئِكَ أَصْحَابُ الْجَحِيمِ(22:51)

Wa allatheena sa’aaw fee ayatina mu’aajizeena ola-ika as-habu aljaheemi

“But those who strive against Our Signs, to frustrate them,- they will be Companions of the Fire.”

They will be companions of the fire says Allah (swt). There can be no doubt.

Alyawma nakhtimu ‘ala afwa-hi-him watuk-allimuna aydeehim watash-hadu arjuluhum bima kanoo yaksiboona

That Day shall We set a seal on their mouths. But their hands will speak to us, and their feet bear witness, to all that they did.

So here we see that saying “Actions speak louder than words”. They’re mouths are sealed because no amount of pleading or excuses will avail them. Their bodies, their hands and feet will speak out loudly about what they did in life. And this is a metaphor also because the eyes will bear witness to what they had seen and the ears and the skin all bear witness. So we need to use our reason to think on these things, to ponder them and act on them for surely these signs are a clear message.

 Part 2

Abu Musa narrates in a sahih hadith that Rasul Allah (saw) said, “My example and the example of what I have been sent with is that of a man who came to some people and said, ‘O people! I have seen the enemy’s army with my own eyes, and I am the clear warner; so protect yourselves!’ Then a group of his people obeyed him and fled at night proceeding stealthily till they were safe, while another group of them disbelieved him and stayed at their places till morning when the army came upon them, and killed and ruined them completely So this is the example of that person who obeys me and follows what I have brought (the Qur’an and the Sunna), and the example of the one who disobeys me and disbelieves the truth I have brought.”

And Allah (swt) says:

أَفَلا يَتَدَبَّرُونَ الْقُرْآنَ وَلَوْ كَانَ مِنْ عِنْدِ غَيْرِ اللَّهِ لَوَجَدُوا فِيهِ اخْتِلافًا كَثِيرًا (4:82)

Afala yatadabbaroona alqur-ana walaw kana min ‘Aindi ghayri Allahi lawajadoo feehi ikhtilafan katheeran

Will they not then, try to understand this Qur’an? Had it come from anyone but Allah they would surely have found in it many contradictions.

The unity of the Quran is greater than that of any other sacred book. How can we account for that except by the unity of Allah’s purpose and design. If the Qur’an had a human source we would have expected much discrepancy. This is from three reasons. 1. The Messenger (saw) who brought it forth was not an educated man, he was not learned in religion nor was he a philosopher. 2. The Qur’an was revealed over a long period of time, in various places, in various circumstances and 3. It is addressed to all types of men and women, it is a universal message. And Yet when it is properly understood its various pieces fit together beautifully even though they may not be in chronological order. This is because there was only one inspirer of this Qur’an and that was Allah (swt). And his message is consistent throughout.

This is an important message to leave here with brothers and sisters. That Allah (swt) is the speaker in this Qur’an. That he wants us to understand what is in it, and when we understand it, to act and worship and obey from the deepest part of our hearts.

Allahi marji’aukum jamee’aan fayunabbi-okum bima kuntum feehi takhtalifoona

The goal of you all is to Allah; it is He that will show you the truth of the matters in which ye dispute

Three new booklets by Imam Salim Chishti

Greetings fellow travelers on the eternal path. We are pleased to announce three new booklets prepared by Imam Salim Chishti.

Chishti Fatiha

The Chishti Fatiha booklet is a compilation of the ceremony of the Chishti lineage to be performed at various times to honor people of renown such as Urs dates or Mawlid. Imam Salim has made the method clear and accessible to English speakers by providing Arabic, Transliteration and English interpretation.

Ten Short Suras

Ten Short Suras is an answer to requests by many people who have started to do the Salat prayer on a regular basis. Many of these do not have Suras of the Qur’an already memorized to use in the Salat prayer. This booklet provides an easy way to learn several Suras. This is a good starting point for memorization of Qur’an. Each Sura is presented in Arabic, transliteration and English interpretation.

Istikhara Prayer

The Istikhara Prayer was taught by the Prophet Muhammad (saw) to his companions in order for them to pray for divine guidance in all important matters of their lives. Few people know of this special prayer or its origins, but it is an extremely useful tool for the believer to set foot with divine guidance on the right path. The booklet covers the historical origins of the prayer as well as a precise description of the method for doing the prayer. The intention is to provide this tool to all who are interested. As in the other booklets all portions in Arabic also have the transliteration and English interpretation making it easy for even non-Arabic speakers to perform these prayers correctly.

All three booklets will be available in paper copies early in March but are available now in PDF format for download. Each one is $5.50 and you can download them from Imam Salim’s website, www.imamsalim.com.

Earliest Chinese version of Quran found in China

Early Chinese Qur'an

Beijing: An earliest Chinese version of the holy Quran, a handwritten copy completed in 1912, has been found by Muslim culture researchers in China’s northwestern Gansu province.

This Quran was found among old archives by researchers with the Muslim Culture Institute of Lanzhou University. It is believed to have been translated into Chinese by Sha Zhong and Ma Fulu, the two noted imams, or Muslim religious leaders and Arabic calligraphers in Lanzhou, said Ding Shiren, head of the institute, Xinhua reported. Khutbah 12/9/2011 – nafs and power of Shaytan

bismillahir rahmanir raheem

Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem

Dear Ones. Several years ago I was listening to the radio and I heard a story on the news that I wanted to relate to you because it relates to the way we are controlled by our own nafs. The story is that many of the Catholics in the Boston area petitioned the bishop there to release them of the rule not to eat meat on Good Friday because there was going to be some kind of sporting event going on and they want to be able to eat hot dogs. Now some of us might find this request rather funny, but in truth it is not. The power of their own nafs was so strong that it overcame their belief in their church. And to his credit the Bishop did not accede to this request and instead reversed the stakes saying that the scheduling of this game on Good Friday was insensitive to the needs of Catholics in Boston and that he would not be watching the game. So, brothers and sisters why do I bring this up? I am not here either to disparage nor to promote the Catholic church but rather I am using this to point out to you and to remind myself of the power of our nafs and of Shaytan to fool us into forgetting to obey the commands of Allah (swt).

You know this comes after many years when the Catholic church prohibited the eating of any meat on any Friday. Then they relaxed this rule and only made it a rule on Good Friday. See how sneaky Shaytan is? He starts with a seemingly innocuous suggestion, but one that we know is false and wrong for us. But once we have become accommodated to that suggestion, he increases it, step by step until we are steeped in disbelief and disobedience.

And how does this affect Muslims? Well, we are not that different. How many of us want to bend the rules just a little in order to make life a little easier? And what does that lead to? I will tell you a story about a shepherd guarding the flock of the village. He grazed the sheep in a field that bordered a forest that was the land of a cruel king. Anyone wandering into the forest was arrested and executed after being tortured, and any livestock that wandered in, became the property of the king. As it happened, each day the flock grazed closer and closer to the edge of the forest. Each time they got closer, the shepherd thought to himself “They get closer to that forest but still, they are in the field and not in any danger so I will let them stay where they are.” But a few of the sheep would always wander away from the flock and the shepherd had to run after them before they got to the forest and bring them back. In a few days the sheep were grazing so close to the forest that when one of them wandered off it went straight into the forest. The shepherd was heedless of the danger and followed the sheep into the forest, hoping to bring it back to the flock. Instead, the kings guards, who had been watching the situation for many days, immediately confiscated the stray sheep and killed the shepherd. Without the vigilance of the shepherd, the rest of the flock wandered into the forest and the village lost them.

So you see, when we stick to the middle of the field, those things in our life which advance our connection with God and what he has enjoined upon is, then we are safe. But if we wander astray from that place, at first it may still seem safe, and so little by little, we enter further and further into the grey areas until we no longer know how to stop and eventually find ourselves on the wrong side of the line.

We must remain vigilant and use the intelligence that Allah (swt) has given us. We must avoid even the slightest hint of getting close to the grey areas, because under the influence of our own nafs and of the whisperings of Shaytan we do not know when to stop.

I once read a tract written by Ayatollah Khomeini (ra) on the prohibition of alcohol. It was written in a Q and A form. In it he explained the reasons for the prohibition from the Quranic perspective and from Sunnah and Shariat. One of the questions that was asked was if it was ok to take just a little alcohol, since that did not affect us much but rather made us just relaxed. His answer was that this may be so. And perhaps, if we could stop there Allah (swt) would have said in the Qur’an that we can have no more than such and such an amount. But the truth is that we cannot stop at that point, that we have the tendency to over do it and we do not know when to stop and so it is forbidden altogether.

This is a part of our natural human-ness. We must be constantly vigilant for these characteristics within ourselves. Bad habits are far too easy to develop and far to hard to break, and good habits are very hard to develop and fall away so easily.

I want to remind you and myself again about what Allah (swt) says in the Quran Sharif in surat al ‘Asr:

وَالْعَصْرِ.(103:1) إِنَّ الإنْسَانَ لَفِي خُسْرٍ.(103:2) إِلا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْحَقِّ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ.(103:3)

Waal’asr(103:1) Inna al-insana lafee khusri (103:2) Illa allatheena amanoo wa’amiloo alssalihati watawa saw bi al haqqi watawa saw bi sabr (103:3)

By (the Token of) Time (through the ages)(103:1),Verily Man is in loss(103:2), Except such as have Faith, and do righteous deeds, and (join together) in the mutual teaching of Truth, and of Patience and Constancy. (103:3)

And it does not have to be through the ages! It is happening minute by minute now even in every day of our lives. The ticking of the clock tries to wear at our iman all the time.

But the good news is that Allah (swt) has promised us that if we do keep the good deeds and if we do keep our faith in him then our reward is in this life and in the next.

And he has given us clear guidance:

Thalika alkitabu la rayba feehi hudan lilmuttaqeena (2:2)Allatheena yu/minoona bialghaybi wayuqeemoona alssalata wamimma razaqnahum yunfiqoona (2:3)Waallatheena yu/minoona bima onzila ilayka wama onzila min qablika wabial-akhirati hum yooqinoona (2:4)Ola-ika ‘aala hudan min rabbihim waola-ika humu almuflihoona (2:5)

This is The Book in which there is no doubt. It is a guide for those who are God conscious,(2:2) who believe in the Unseen, who establish Salah (five regular daily prayers) and spend in charity out of what We have provided for their sustenance;(2:3) who believe in this Revelation (The Qur’an) which is sent to you (O Muhammad) and the Revelations which were sent before you (Torah, Psalms, Gospel…) and firmly believe in the Hereafter.(2:4)

They are on True Guidance from their Rabb and they are the ones who will prosper.(2:5)

And what an amazing gift this is. Such a clear light of guidance.

Part 2

And do we ask for Allah (swt) to relieve us of these obligatory tasks when it is inconvenient for us? Oh Allah, there is a ball game on Friday, can I skip my prayers that day? Oh Allah, I live where it is very difficult to get Halal meats and other food, can I eat pork just once or twice? No!

But you know what? Allah (swt) has already known about this, he knows what is in our hearts and in our minds, he never tires and does not sleep. La ta huduhu sinatum wa la nawm, and he is vigilant in our cause. In his infinite mercy and compassion He has relieved our burdens. He has already given us that which we have not even asked from him. For instance, when we are traveling, do we not get a dispensation on prayers and even even for fasting during Ramadhan? And there are other examples too many to mention here. Remember – if Allah (swt) wanted to make it impossible for us to follow our deen believe me IT WOULD BE! But it is not.

And in return for this what does Allah (swt) ask of us? Simply that we follow that which he has commanded us to do, and to avoid those things which he has forbidden for us and that we worship him with all our hearts and souls.

And Allah knows best.

Kamran Pasha: Inside a Syrian Quran School for Women: The Spiritual Roots of a Revolution

We hear so much negative news about Syria and the middle east in general. Much good is happening as well. Progressive people, men, women, are participating quietly in a revolution of thought and custom. Ya Fatah! I say to them. Your brothers and sisters pray for you. This is a good article about one of those.
