Tawakkul – Trust in Allah (swt)

Alhamdulillāh, we praise Allah (swt), seek His help, and ask for His forgiveness. We seek refuge in Allah (swt) from the evil within ourselves and from the consequences of our actions. Whomever Allah (swt) guides, none can misguide; and whomever He allows to go astray, none can guide. I bear witness that there is no god worthy of worship except Allah (swt) alone, without partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad ﷺ is His servant and messenger.

O believers, be mindful of Allah (swt) as He deserves, and do not die except in a state of Islam.

Allah (swt) says:

“And whoever relies upon Allah (swt) — then He is sufficient for him.” (Surah At-Talaq 65:3)

This verse is not poetry. It is a promise. A guarantee. A divine contract between the Creator and His servant.

Tawakkul is not passive hope. It is not wishful thinking. It is the deep, steady conviction that Allah (swt) is in control — even when everything around us feels uncertain.

Tawakkul is made of two parts:

  1. Doing your part — taking action, making effort, planning, striving.
  2. Surrendering the outcome to Allah (swt) — knowing that results come only from Him.

The Prophet ﷺ taught this balance beautifully. A man asked:

“Should I tie my camel or trust in Allah (swt)?” The Prophet ﷺ replied: “Tie it, and trust in Allah (swt).” (Tirmidhi)

This is the formula of a believer: Work with your hands. Trust with your heart.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“If you were to rely upon Allah (swt) with true reliance, He would provide for you as He provides for the birds: they leave their nests hungry in the morning and return full in the evening.” (Ibn Majah)

Notice the birds do not sit in their nests waiting for sustenance. They move, they search, they strive — and Allah (swt) provides.

Tawakkul transforms fear into calm. It turns anxiety into clarity. It turns hardship into spiritual elevation.

A believer who trusts Allah (swt):

  • Does not panic when plans fail
  • Does not crumble when people disappoint
  • Does not lose hope when doors close
  • Does not measure success by worldly results
  • Feels a quiet confidence even in uncertainty

Because they know: Allah (swt) never abandons the heart that relies on Him.

How to Strengthen Trust in Allah (swt)

  1. Know Allah (swt)’s Names The more you know Al-Razzāq (The Provider), Al-Hafīdh (The Protector), Al-Wakīl (The Disposer of Affairs), the more your heart rests.
  2. Remember past blessings Every difficulty you survived was proof that Allah (swt) was with you.
  3. Make du‘ā with certainty The Prophet ﷺ said: “Call upon Allah (swt) while being certain that He will answer you.”
  4. Let go of what you cannot control Your job is effort. Allah (swt)’s job is outcome.
  5. Stay patient during delays Sometimes Allah (swt) withholds to give you something better. Sometimes He delays to prepare your heart. Sometimes He protects you from what you thought you wanted.

Even the prophets — the most beloved to Allah (swt) — faced trials. But they walked through them with trust.

Musa عليه السلام stood before the sea with an army behind him. Maryam عليها السلام gave birth alone under a palm tree. Ibrahim عليه السلام was thrown into a fire.

Their trust did not remove hardship — it carried them through it.

O Allah (swt), make us among those who trust You fully. Fill our hearts with certainty, calm, and reliance upon You. Grant us strength in hardship, gratitude in ease, and sincerity in all our actions. O Allah (swt), be our Protector, our Provider, our Guide, and our Guardian.

Indeed, Allah (swt) commands justice, excellence, and kindness to relatives, and He forbids immorality, wrongdoing, and oppression. Remember Allah (swt), and He will remember you. Be grateful to Him, and He will increase you.
