Green Deen: What Islam Teaches About Protecting the Planet

From childhood, Ibrahim Abdul-Matin was taught that “the Earth is a Mosque,” leading him to his belief that the planet is a sacred place where prayer and worship happen and therefore, we are responsible for protecting every aspect of it. You are invited to an interactive evening with the author of “Green Deen: What Islam Teaches About Protecting the Planet,” Ibrahim Abdul-Matin. The evening will include his story of becoming an environmental justice activist and organizer, discussion of Islamic scriptural passages that describe a faith-based mandate to protect the planet, role plays and story telling on how faith relates to waste, water, watts (energy), and food. Jewish mystics on the Sufi path – Bikya Masr

Make a joyful noise!

I have always been fascinated by the similarities (and the differences) in forms of worship between the Hasidim and Sufis. Their dancing and joyful singing impressed me as being a parallel to Sufi Sema. In this article (link below) Nimet Seker speaks of much more that I was unaware of, especially among the Egyptian mystic Jews. As we get closer and closer to God, we get closer and closer to each other – but of course!

“BONN, Germany: Jews do not traditionally destroy texts that include the name of God – even when they are no longer needed. Such texts are kept in the synagogue in a special room called the geniza (hiding place in Hebrew). Over 100 years ago, the geniza of the Ben Ezra Synagogue in Cairo was opened, and extraordinary things came to light.”

With CIMAP help, flowers at Ajmer Dargah to bring jobs for local women

Dargah Sharif Khwaja Mounuddin Chishti

At the Dargah of Moinuddin Chishti in Ajmer there is a wonderful project to recycle the many flowers that are given each day in honor of the great saint. This project will not only be a way of using this resource for a wonderful product but will also empower and employ the women of the area.

“Nearly 15 to18 quintals of flowers, offered each day at the Ajmer Sherif Dargah of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, used to be dumped in a well till date. Now, the flowers will not only be recycled, but will also help generate employment for local women.” – from IndianExpress.com look at the full article by clicking on the link below.

Sufi Soul – The Mystic Music Of Islam "Documentary"

Sama

With a dogmatic and fundamentalist view of Muslims increasingly predominant in the Western media, there has never been a more important time to show an alternative view of Islam. Sufism is the mystical dimension of Islam that preaches peace, tolerance and pluralism, while encouraging music as a way of deepening one’s relationship with God. This documentary explores Sufism and its music in different parts of the Islamic world, including Syria, Turkey, Pakistan and Morocco. Ya Sin #15 (ayat 81 – 83)

Continuing our look at Sura Ya Sin – the omnipotence of Allah (swt). The second part of the Khutbah relates to all the recent events invoving people who choose terrorism and killing of innocents over what Rasul Allah (saw) has given us.

Awa laysa allathee khalaqa assamawati wal-arda biqadirin ‘aala an yakhluqa mithlahum bala wahuwa alkhallaqu al’aaleemu

“Is He Who created the heavens and the earth not then able to create them anew?” – Yes, indeed! for He is the Creator, supreme in infinite skill and knowledge!

036.082 إِنَّمَا أَمْرُهُ إِذَا أَرَادَ شَيْئًا أَنْ يَقُولَ لَهُ كُنْ فَيَكُونُ

Innama amruhu itha arada shay-an an yaqoola lahu kun fayakoonu

His state alone is such that, when He wills a thing, His Command is, “be”, and it is!

036.083 فَسُبْحَانَ الَّذِي بِيَدِهِ مَلَكُوتُ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ وَإِلَيْهِ تُرْجَعُونَ

Fasubhana allathee biyadihi malakootu kulli shay-in wa-ilayhi turja’aoona

Limitless then, in His glory is He in whose hands rests the mighty dominion over all thing; and to Him you will all be brought back..

Part 2

Are we better off now as a result of all this? Who are these people who call themselves Muslims and yet perform treachery against us by committing evil acts?

Yahya related to me from Malik from Yahya ibn Said that Abu Bakr as-Siddiq was sending armies to ash-Sham. He went for a walk with Yazid ibn Abi Sufyan who was the commander of one of the battalions. It is claimed that Yazid said to Abu Bakr, “Will you ride or shall I get down?” Abu Bakr said, “I will not ride and you will not get down. I intend these steps of mine to be in the way of Allah.” Then Abu Bakr advised Yazid, “You will find a people who claim to have totally given themselves to Allah. Leave them to what they claim to have given themselves. You will find a people who have shaved the middle of their heads, strike what they have shaved with the sword. “I advise you ten things: Do not kill women or children or an aged, infirm person. Do not cut down fruit-bearing trees. Do not destroy an inhabited place. Do not slaughter sheep or camels except for food. Do not burn bees and do not scatter them. Do not steal from the booty, and do not be cowardly.”

Yahya related to me from Malik that he had heard that Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz wrote to one of his governors, “It has been passed down to us that when the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, sent out a raiding party, he would say to them, ‘Make your raids in the name of Allah in the way of Allah. Fight whoever denies Allah. Do not steal from the booty, and do not act treacherously. Do not mutilate and do not kill children.’ Say the same to your armies and raiding parties, Allah willing. Peace be upon you.”

Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab that a son of Kab ibn Malik (Malik believed that ibn Shihab said it was Abd ar-Rahman ibn Kab) said, “The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, forbade those who fought ibn Abi Huqayq (a treacherous jew from Madina) to kill women and children. He said that one of the men fighting had said, ‘The wife of ibn Abi Huqayq began screaming and I repeatedly raised my sword against her. Then I would remember the prohibition of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, so I would stop. Had it not been for that, we would have been rid of her.’ “

Ibn Abbas writing in answer to a question…You have written asking me whether the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) took women with him to participate in Jihad. He did take them to the battle and sometimes he fought alongside them. They would treat the wounded and were given a reward from the booty, but he did not assign any regular share for them. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) did not kill the children of the enemy, so you should not kill the children.

Are we better off now as a result of all this? Who are these people who call themselves Muslims and yet perform treachery against us by committing evil acts?
