Entering the sacred month of Rajab

bismillahir rahmanir raheem

Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem

As salaam alaykum! Today we enter the sacred month of Rajab. This begins the time of the heart which flows through Rajab and Sha’ban and ends with the festival at the end of the month of Ramadhan – Eid ul Fitr.

A du’a that one can say at the beginning of the month comes from Rasul Allah (swt) who would say “Oh Allah, bless us in Rajab and Sha’ban that we may see Ramadhan.”

There are many benefits of Rajab and du’a and prayers for those who wish to take advantage of them.

Oh Allah bless us in Rajab and Sha'ban and let us see Ramadhan

Allahuma barik lana fi rajab wa sha’ban wa ballighna ramadhan

How can we honor the month of Rajab and use it as a preparation for Ramadan?

Reflect on your Life and Deeds. Muhasaba is a wonderful practice at any time of the year but it brings with it the special care one takes during this sacred month. In this practice you ask yourself the hard questions we normally don’t like to think about: If I died today, where would I stand with Allah? Have I prepared for Ramadan? Have I been conscious of what I am saying and doing to those around me? Am I stagnant in my worship?

Be conscious of your nafs. We should not always give the nafs what it wants. This can be something materialistic, for pleasure or for our getting “over” someone else. One of the goals is to increase in our awareness of Allah (swt) in our hearts by not indulging. Eat a simple meals, wake up early and go for a walk, pray extra prayers, pray deeply, remembering that Allah (swt) is guiding you in your heart, go to the mosque for fajr, exert yourself in the cause of Allah and do something to teach your nafs to be patient.

Fasting. There is no better way to prepare for Ramadan than to fast some extra days. A’isha (ra) was known to fast during the summer, and the explanation was that she would do that because it was a difficult thing to do yet showed her strong devotion. Ramadhan, in its course through the seasons year by year will come in the summer as it will this year (in the northern hemisphere) and we cannot change that. But we can follow our mother A’isha (ra) and be of those few that do something valuable before we are all obligated to fast. Now is the time to not only prepare for fasting but to gain some reward as the temperature rises.

Remember the Hereafter. Because of its complaint to Allah (swt) Hell is allowed to take two breaths each year – in the summer its breath is when the severest heat is felt and in the winter it is when the severest cold is felt. Therfore as the heat is felt in your heart and your body this summer remember the hereafter and how we want to avoid the hellfire.

Charity. In this sacred month, be charitable in the cause of Allah (swt). Remembering our Prophet’s (saw) behavior and character, be courteous, help someone, feed another, saying a kind word, sharing a reminder of the deen and even abstaining from doing a bad deed are all non-monetary forms of charity taught to us by the Messenger (swt)

Supplicate (make du`a’) to Allah. Remember the du’a above, Ask Allah (swt) for His forgiveness and guidance.

Take Care of Your Tree. Ibn Rajab used to say: “The year is like a tree. The days of Rajab are its leaves, the days of Sha’ban are its branching and the days of Ramadan are when its fruits are reaped. The reapers are the believers. It is befitting for the one who has blackened his pages with sins to whiten them with repentance in this month, and for the one who has squandered his life in idleness to profit in it from what remains of his life.”

And Allah Knows Best

Please help me get to Pir Rasheed's Urs

Imam Salim and Pir Rasheed 2009

Imam Salim and Pir Rasheed at his home in 2009

I am starting an indiegogo fund raising campaign asking for people to help fund my trip to Hyderabad, India to attend the first Urs ceremony of my beloved teacher, Pir Rasheed ul Hassan Jili ul Kaleemi. The indiegogo link is http://igg.me/at/pir-rasheed.

About 7 years ago I had the pleasure of meeting Pir Rasheed in Hyderabad, India. Over the intervening years my wife and I spent many hours with him whenever we were in India. Pir Rasheed was the grandson of the Sheikh who was the Murshid of Hazrat Inayat Khan’s Murshid – Syed Abu Hashem Madani. Pir Rasheed is also the inheritor of a shamanic method of spiritual healing which he transmitted to us in many teachings and demonstrations, eventually leading to his giving us ijazat (permission) to use these methods for the sake of healing people and humanity. The picture is of Pir Rasheed and me.

Pir Rasheed was a very humble person and was very loved by many people in his community and around the world. He offered not only his teachings but also his friendship. Tara and I were always welcome in his home and felt that wonderful friendship first hand. When he came to the US I had the great honor to escort him around the country to various meetings to meet Sufi Order mureeds. He also was a regular attendee to the Urs ceremonies of Hazrat Inayat Khan in Delhi, speaking on Sufism and love. He and I and his mureeds would also travel around Delhi, visiting other Dargahs and spending time together. Go to the indiegogo campaign.

In December of last year Pir Rasheed passed this mortal coil to be re-united with the beloved. It saddened me that I could not attend his funeral in Hyderabad. This year in early December his first Urs (spiritual wedding with the beloved) will be commemorated in Tolichowki, Hyderabad, India at the Kaleemi Astana (pictured).  I would dearly like to attend this and have been encouraged by friends in the US and in India to go because of the special friendship that Pir Rasheed and I had. Our mutual friend, Scott Kugle, told me in an email that it would be a blessing and a miracle if I were able to attend this first Urs. I dearly want to go.

My dilemma is the cost of the air tickets. The cost is prohibitive to me and I need help from you if I am to be able to go. Once I get there I will have very little expenses as friends will be able to put me up.

Please consider donating any amount. Larger donations will get me to the goal faster but every dollar will help.

I will be producing a video and pictures of the event which you will be able to see on YouTube.

Thanks for your consideration.

Imam Salim

Sufi festival inspires young Moroccans

By Siham Ali in Fes for Magharebia – 18/04/2014

The Fes Festival of Sufi Culture, which runs through Saturday (April 19th) in Morocco’s spiritual capital, is more than just entertainment.

At a time of growing fundamentalism and radicalism, Sufi Islam can combat backward ideology, participants and visitors agree.

The annual celebration “allows people to discover the spiritual heritage of Sufism in Morocco and the world in its various cultural, spiritual and social forms of expression”, festival director Faouzi Skalli explains.

“Dozens of artists and visitors of various nationalities come every year to celebrate peace and tolerance,” says Curro Piñana, a performer from Spain.

The eighth edition of the week-long event is dedicated to Arab-Andalusian mystic and philosopher Muhyiddin Ibn Al Arabi.

But the many Sufi brotherhoods, including the young singers from the Tariqa Boutchichiya, are the heart of the festival.

The goal of all participants is to encourage peace and tolerance, says Abdelwahed Afilal, a member of the national Samaa ensemble.

“Sufism is an experience that purifies the soul. Perfection comes with learning and perseverance,” he says.

Morocco has always paid particular attention to Sufism, through several Brotherhoods throughout the country, sociologist Samira Kassimi told Magharebia.

“These brotherhoods play a very important role in the spread of knowledge, best practice and the principles of tolerance and peace,” she said.

The festival’s organisers say that Morocco’s Sufi religious brotherhoods have acquired international influence over time and formed many branches in different countries.

“The roles of these Sufi paths of learning, civic and spiritual education, commitment to human development and peace mediation, in addition to a deep and creative cultural legacy, have formed a model for Islamic culture in Morocco,” Skalli says.

The Fes festival “marries the spiritualism of Sufism with social action”, sociologist Maria Sanoussi notes.

Exposing young people to Sufi Islam may help deter them from extremism, she says. Many of them are being encouraged by their families to move towards the Sufi path.

“Experience has shown that they have been able to make a success of their future and live in harmony with their principles and goals,” she adds.

Hicham Sibari, 28, discovered the path of Sufism five years ago, thanks to his uncle.

“I never miss the Sufi music festival in Fes, even though I live in Agadir,” he tells Magharebia.

“Following the path of Sufism enabled me to find spiritual peace and move forward in my personal life and my career at a time when I was lost,” he adds.

His friend Hamza points out: “Sufism can prevent young people from becoming easy prey for religious fanatics, who have no hesitation in exploiting them to achieve their devilish goals.”

Hamza knows what he is talking about; one of his friends almost stumbled onto the path of extremism.

“Luckily, he found people close to him who helped him climb out of the abyss of fanaticism,” he says.
